They made Minis that looked like this until 2000.

Kinja'd!!!

Did they really go that long virtually unchanged? It looks like the only thing that changed was that the wheels got wider.

Well, there were a range of different fascia and miscellaneous shenanigans, but yes. A lot of people don't realize that the BMW MINI design was in process while the original was still being built.

Yup. Over time they were updated with small things here and there, like a solid dashboard, winding windows, additional gauges, A/C, central locking, airbags etc. But the basic shape and design remained unchanged over the best part of forty years, much like the Beetle. It's funny to be driving around in such an old design, yet knowing it's actually younger than myself.

Yup.

They also made the classic Beetle until 2003.

(This is the last classic Beetle to roll off the assembly line, July 30th 2003).

Made in Mexico. I've got a friend in Phoenix with dual US / Mexican citizenship who daily drives a 1997 Classic Beetle. The thing is the tits.

Very true that, because BMW owned the Rover Group who made the Mini at the time. Apparently, I've heard BMW's designers picked out design cues from the Rover parts bin - the wing mirrors on the Rover 75 look very similar to the ones on the BMW MINI...

I became concerned that when I read "1997" and "classic" together.

Classic style. There's some overlap in production, as the "New Beetle" (the round girly one introduced for the millennium) began production in 1997. Both the old and new style were sold in Mexico for a few years. Hence, "New" Beetle and "Classic" Beetle.

Oh, I followed you and figured it out...I just freaked a bit because a little while ago I heard Blink-182 on a station for "Classic Rock" and proceeded to curl into the fetal position.

Yeah, I'm starting to feel that too... 90's rock is now considered "Classic" *shudders*

Went to the Phoenix art museum a few months back, they were having an exhibit on video games...

They had a fucking PS2 on display, behind a glass case.

Shit...my PS1 should be under heavy security, then.

I don't think I could afford to lock down the Sega Genesis or N64.
